Christopher Marlowe was born today in 1564. One of his most famous poems: "The Passionate Shepherd to his Love" talks of birds and flowers, dancing and singing and pretty lambs. https://bit.ly/3aDrbLn You’d never think of him as an absolute hooligan! He was involved in a street fight where a man was killed, deported from the Netherlands for trying to forge gold coins and was on the point of being arrested for spreading atheistic beliefs when he was killed in a bar brawl over the bill.
In 1599 Sir Walter Raleigh wrote a response to The Passionate Shepherd:
If all the world and love were young,
And truths in every Shepherd’s tongue,
These pretty pleasures might me move,
To live with thee and be thy love.
Me too!
